Union SG striker Boniface nominated for JPL Player of the Season, why Orban was omitted
Published: May 31, 2023Victor Boniface is in the running for the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Season Award following his exceptional performances for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise this season.
Boniface has registered 9 goals and eight assists for USG in 36 appearances in the Belgian top-flight this campaign.
The performance of the 22-year-old is one of the reasons Union SG are in a position to win the Jupiler Pro League for the first time in 88 years.
Boniface faces competition from his teammate and captain Teddy Teuma and Ebony Shoe winner Mike Trésor who has registered 23 assists the season which is a record in the Belgian top-flight.
Other nominees include: Toby Alderweireld (Antwerp),Hugo Cuypers (KAA Ghent), Jean Butez (Antwerp), Vincent Janssen (Antwerp),Bryan Heynen ( Genk), Joseph Paintsil (Genk) and Maxim De Cuyper (Westerlo).
A surprise omission is Gift Orban who has painted Belgium with goals since his arrival in January, scoring 15 goals in 15 games.
Orban was excluded because he didn't meet the requirement for "minimum minutes" played" by a player having made his debut for Gent in February.
The winner is decided by votes of all Jupiler Pro League players and Belgian players playing abroad at the highest level.
The last and only Nigerian to have won the award is Paul Onuachu who bagged the award in the 2020/2021 season.
