Sturm Graz chief confirms Arsenal GK Okonkwo is back in England after loan spell in Austria
Published: June 05, 2023
Sturm Graz's Managing Director Sport, Andreas Schicker has confirmed that Arsenal-owned goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has returned to England following the completion of his loan spell with the Austrian Bundesliga side.
The London-born Nigerian goalkeeper was an unused substitute as Sturm Graz ended the 2022-2023 season with a 2-0 win over LASK on Saturday evening.
Sturm Graz want to re-engage Okonkwo for next season but another loan would only be possible if the goalkeeper extends his contract with the Gunners, which expires in June 2024.
Schicker has claimed that the Anglo-Nigerian glovesman would like to continue his development at Sturm Graz despite speculation linking the Hale End Academy graduate with possible moves to German and English clubs.
Providing an update on the future of Okonkwo, Schicker told Sky Sport Austria on Sunday (via ligaportal) : "There will also be a personal meeting. He flew to London today, so we'll see what comes of it.
"I have a feeling he would like to stay. I also think that from a sporting point of view there can be nothing better than playing for Sturm Graz next year.”
Although Okonkwo has yet to make his senior debut for boyhood club Arsenal, he has received ten call-ups to the first team for competitive matches including seven in the Premier League.
The 21-year-old is currently behind Aaron Ramsdale and Matt Turner in the pecking order of goalkeepers at the Emirates Stadium.
