Official: Bournemouth release 19yo winger of Nigerian descent
Published: June 07, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Premier League club Bournemouth have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season.
The Cherries have confirmed that versatile Anglo-Nigerian winger Josh Popoola will depart the club upon the conclusion of his contract on June 30, 2023.
Popoola was offered a one-year deal last summer after impressing Bournemouth U21 coach Shaun Cooper and his staff during pre-season preparations.
Although he departs the Vitality Stadium without making his senior debut, he was invited to train with the first team several times.
The 19-year-old impressed on his competitive debut for Bournemouth's U21s, scoring and providing an assist in a 3-0 win over Brighton & Hove.
London born Popoola spent a portion of last season on loan at National League South outfit Cheshunt FC, for whom he scored two goals in six league appearances.
He was on the books of Watford for seven years and also played for non-leaguers Hitchin Town FC before his move to Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, former Tottenham Hotspur schoolboy Ferdinand Okoh has been retained and will represent Bournemouth's development squad in 2023-2024.
In addition, Dominic Solanke is among the senior professionals retained at first team level.
