Super Eagles invitee Nwachukwu on target but Bendel Insurance's 21-match unbeaten run ends
Published: June 10, 2023
Divine Nwachukwu celebrated his first-ever call-up to the senior national team by getting on the scoresheet as Bendel Insurance were beaten 2-1 by Rivers United in the NPFL Championship playoffs on Friday, June 9.
Nwachukwu has earned a promotion to the Super Eagles, less than four years after he featured at the 2019 Fifa U17 World Cup, where he played in matches against Australia and the Netherlands.
The attacking midfielder has seen his stock rise this season thanks to hie excellent displays for Bendel Insurance.
He has now scored in each of his last three matches for Bendel Insurance in the playoffs and showcased his playmaking abilities in the regular season with five assists to his name.
Nwachukwu has started every single game contested by Bendel Insurance in the NPFL this season, and played a key role as they remained undefeated for twenty one games in a row before yesterday's loss to Rivers United.
Morice Chukwu and Joseph Onoja each scored to give Rivers United a valuable two-goal lead, but Nwachukwu headed home for Bendel Insurance to half the deficit in the closing minutes.
Should he play against Sierra Leone, Nwachukwu would become only the second Golden Eaglets player in the class of 2019 to feature for the Super Eagles, following in the footsteps of Red Bull Salzburg's Samson Tijani.
