Chelsea ready to break African transfer record for a GK to sign ex-Barcelona star
Published: June 10, 2023
Chelsea intend to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window and one of the key areas is the goalkeeping position.
Former Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper André Onana is the main target of the Blues but the Premier League giants have seen their first offer rejected by UEFA Champions League finalist Inter Milan.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Inter Milan turned down a 40 million euros proposal from Chelsea for Onana.
At that fee, Onana would have become the most expensive African goalkeeper in history, surpassing Senegal star Edouard Mendy, who moved to Chelsea from Rennes in exchange for 24 million euros in 2020.
The bid was made in the most important stretch of the season for the Nerazzurri, which is playing the Champions League final against Premier League champions Manchester City in Istanbul on Saturday evening.
Onana, reportedly, has agreed personal terms with Chelsea and it is now left for the two clubs to agree a transfer fee.
Chelsea new manger Mauricio Pochettino has already given the club the green light to complete the deal.
Onana has a contract with Inter Milan until June 2027 and the Nerazzurri have placed a price tag of around 46 million euros on the Samuel Eto'o Academy product.
