Done deal: 2019 U17 AFCON star joins Cypriot powerhouse APOEL
Published: June 24, 2023
Through a press release published on their official website, Cypriot First Division powerhouse APOEL Nicosia have announced the signing of former Nigeria U17 international Fawaz Abdullahi.
Fawaz was a member of the Golden Eaglets squad to the 2019 Africa U17 Cup of Nations in Tanzania, where he figured in four of the five matches contested by the team coached by Manu Garba.
The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal which will keep him at APOEL until the end of the 2025-2026 season.
Fawaz began his professional career with Bnei Yehuda in Israel, from where he moved to Cyrpriot outfit Doxa Katokopias in August 2022.
A central midfielder by trade, he played in 25 matches in all competitions for Doxa Katokopias, and the highlight of his season was providing the game-winning assist in a 1-0 win versus Olympiakos Nicosia on April 13.
Signed as a player for the future, Fawaz will be registered on APOEL Nicosia's B list next season.
APOEL have won the Cypriot First Division 28 times, more than any club in the Island Nation, and their biggest achievement in Europe was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2011-2012 Champions League.
Retired Nigeria international Michael Obiku and ex-Juventus youth teamer Benjamin Onwuachu played for APOEL in the past.
