Super Eagles-eligible player to take over goalkeeping duties at Freiburg, new deal on the cards
Published: July 02, 2023Germany U21 international of Nigerian descent Noah Atubolu is set to be installed as the first choice goalkeeper at German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg for the forthcoming season, according to reports.
According to German newspaper Bild via Fussballtransfers, Noah Atubolu is planned as the new number one at Freiburg and a new contract should take this fact into account.
Atubolu has climbed up the pecking order amongst the goalkeepers at Freiburg following the transfer of Dutchman Mark Flekken to Premier League side Brentford in the offseason.
Although the German-Nigerian glovesman signed a contract extension at Breisgau-Brasilianer last October, his new status as Freiburg's first choice goalkeeper should be reflected in his contract.
Atubolu has been on the books of Freiburg for eight years, rising through the age groups to make his senior debut in a DFB Pokal clash with St. Pauli in October 2022.
Overall, the 21-year-old has received 23 call-ups for first team games played by Freiburg, three of which he started.
He was with Germany's U21 national team at the ongoing European U21 Championship, where he started all the group matches before they exited the competition after a 2-0 loss to England.
