Official: Moldovan champions FC Sheriff Tiraspol sign third Nigerian player in 2023
Published: July 07, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Moldovan champions FC Sheriff Tiraspol have announced the signing of David Ankeye.
Ankeye is the third Nigerian player the Yellow-Blacks have signed in 2023, after Origbaajo Ismaila and Peter Ademo, who joined the club in February and July respectively.
Rasheed Akanbi and Iyayi Believe Atiemwen represented Sheriff Tiraspol last season including in the group stage of the Europa League.
Born on May 22, 2002, Ankeye started his career at Sidos Academy, a grassroots club based in Lagos that produced ex-Golden Eaglets winger Akinkunmi Amoo.
From Sidos Academy, he switched to Swedish club Hammarby and represented Tunisian club Hammam Sousse in the last eight months.
Ankeye has earned a transfer to Sheriff Tiraspol after a breakout season at Hammam Sousse, scoring seven goals and registering an assist in fifteen matches in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
Sheriff Tiraspol will face Romanian champions Farul Constanța in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, with the first leg holding at Stadionul Central (Ovidiu) on July 12 and the second leg on July 18 at Sheriff Stadium, Tiraspol.
