Opposition watch: Canada name Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham stars in 23-player squad

Less than two weeks to the start of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Super Falcons group opponent and Olympic champions, Canada have released a 23-player list to compete at the tournament.


Canada are drawn in Group B alongside Nigeria, co-host Australia, and Republic of Ireland.


The Olympic champions will face the Super Falcons in their opening game of the Women's World Cup at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on July 21.


Coach Bev Priestman named a 23-player list which includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, five midfielders, and eight forwards.

In the list, coach Priestman included team captain Christine Sinclair, who will be making her sixth appearance at the mundial aged 40 and Cloe Lacasse, who just signed for Arsenal after scoring five goals for Benfica in the UEFA Women's Champions League last campaign.


The list also includes Chelsea's Kadeisha Buchanan and Jessie Fleming, Manchester United defender Jayde Riviere and Tottenham Hotspur star Shelina Zadorsky.


2022 Canada Soccer Young Player of the Year Simi Awujo, who is of Nigerian descent, has also been named in the squad. 


However, the team will miss Desiree Scott, a veteran and leader in the squad, who failed to recover from a knee injury and Jade Rose, who left the camp over the weekend with an undisclosed injury.
