Everton and Super Eagles legend Yobo set to be appointed Rivers United General Manager
Published: July 17, 2023The Rivers State Government led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara has completed plans to hand over 2022 NPFL champions, Rivers United to Everton legend Joseph Yobo to manage.
Multiple sources from the government house in Port Harcourt have it that Governor Fubara wants to toe the line of his Abia State counterpart Alex Otti, who recently appointed former African Footballer of the Year, Kanu Nwankwo as Chairman of Enyimba FC of Aba.
Yobo, a former Super Eagles captain, who led Nigeria to AFCON 2013 title is expected to take over from General Manager Okey Kpalukwu.
Rivers United will campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup this season having finished third in the season-ending NPFL Super 6 tournament.
Yobo won a Turkish Super League title with Fenerbahce, alongside two Cup titles as a player of the Yellow Canaries.
The 42-year-old once acted as assistant coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but his only known football managerial experience is running football camps in Lagos, Nigeria.
Yobo is also the conveyor of a social-political group, the Grassroots Mobilization Initiative for Good Governance (GMI), which he launched in 2022 ahead of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.
