George scores late equaliser for Chelsea XI in six-goal thriller against Boreham Wood
Published: July 19, 2023
Two players of Nigerian descent Tyrique George and Somto Boniface got pre-season minutes as a Chelsea XI comprising a mixture of U18 and development squad players plus Callum Hudson-Odoi were held to an entertaining 3-3 draw by National League side Boreham Wood F.C. on Tuesday night.
In the friendly staged at Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park, the fifth-tier side found themselves three goals up inside twenty minutes but an epic second half performance from Chelsea earned them a draw.
Kwesi Appiah gave Boreham Wood a dream start when he volleyed home in the second minute, and Mo Sagaf finished into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to double the advantage in the ninth minute, before Tyrone Marsh with an excellent finish made it 3-0.
The lively Callum Hudson-Odoi pulled one back for Chelsea just before halftime after a great run from midfield.
Boreham Wood coach Luke Garrard made three changes at the break, one of which saw 2017 Super Eagles invitee Femi Ilesanmi replaced by Coxe.
On the hour mark, Chelsea got their second goal through Leo Castledine whose header gave the goalkeeper no chance.
Chelsea Academy Scholar of the Year for the 2022-2023 season, Somto Boniface and Tyrique George entered the game as substitutes at the midway point of the second half.
George got Chelsea back on level terms in the 83rd minute when he unleashed a thunderous shot and the Blues could have won two minutes from time but the Boreham Wood goalkeeper denied Boniface with a brilliant diving save.
