Promising defender Olufunwa agrees move to Scottish club after release by Liverpool
Published: August 03, 2023
Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone are on the verge of announcing the signing of talented English-born Nigerian defender Oludare Olufunwa, after his release by Liverpool at the end of last month, according to various reports in the English press.
St Johnstone manager Steven MacLean has confirmed that the Saints are close to finalizing two signings without revealing the identities of the players.
Sky Sports is reporting that MacLean is keen to bolster his defensive ranks with the signing of former Liverpool defender Oludare Olufunwa and Northern Ireland international Sam McClelland.
Olufunwa was at the Southampton academy for eleven years before joining Liverpool last summer.
The 22-year-old trained with EFL League One club Burton Albion last month before heading to Perth to formalize a switch to St Johnstone.
Although Olufunwa has yet to make his senior debut, he has played against Men's teams, featuring in Papa Johns Trophy matches against Charlton Athletic, Crawley Town, Salford City and Rochdale.
The most notable Nigerian player to feature for St Johnstone in recent years is none other than 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Efe Ambrose.
Just as the former Celtic star, Olufunwa offers versatility as he is adept at playing centre-back and can also be deployed at right-back if the need arises.
