Olufunwa sends parting message to Liverpool after sealing transfer to St Johnstone
Published: August 04, 2023
English-born Nigerian defender Oludare Olufunwa has sent a parting message to everyone associated with Premier League club Liverpool after completing a permanent transfer to Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.
The Saints confirmed the signing of Olufunwa on Friday on a two-year contract that keeps him at McDiarmid Park until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
By moving to St Johnstone, he has ended a 12-year association with English clubs, with eleven in the colours of boyhood club Southampton.
He joined Liverpool last summer following a successful trial but injuries limited his appearances to ten games in all competitions and deprived him of the opportunity to make his senior debut for the Anfield club.
Olufunwa scored his only goal in a Liverpool shirt as the Reds U21s team thrashed Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 in the Premier League International Cup back in January.
In a goodbye message to Liverpool, Olufunwa posted on social media on Friday afternoon: "I want to thank the Liverpool family for all the help they’ve given me since I joined the club.
"It was a pleasure to work with such amazing staff and players everyday and create some great memories. Lastly, thank you to all the fans for supporting me on my journey."
Olufunwa, who can play centre back or right back, is eligible to be named in St. Johnstone's matchday squad in Saturday's Premiership clash against Hearts.
