'He's just so powerful' - Ex-Man Utd star Hargreaves warns PL defenders about Awoniyi
Published: August 19, 2023
Nottingham Forest continued their impressive home form with a hard-earned 2-1 win against Sheffield United at the City Ground on Friday night thanks to goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood.
The Nigeria international is really enjoying a purple patch at the moment, causing Arsenal all sorts of problems in Forest's opening game at the Emirates Stadium and he was at it again barely two and half minutes on the clock against Sheffield United.
Awoniyi gave the two-time Europeans the lead early on,j ust over two minutes in, when he headed home an excellent delivery from Serge Aurier, but the Blades equalized in spectacular fashion two minutes into the second half through debutant Gustavo Hamer, before Wood stepped off the pitch to score what proved to be the game-winning goal at minute 89.
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has highlighted the physical presence that Awoniyi brings to the Nottingham Forest team and reckons that the Nigerian will prove a handful for defenders in the Premier League.
Speaking on Premier League Productions shortly after the game, Hargreaves remarked: "He's going to cause a lot of people problems.
"Physically, he is just so powerful, so explosive. The weight of that pass is perfect, he just hit it first time and the header was brilliant.
"Physically, with his size, his leaping ability and his speed, he will be awful to play against".
Awoniyi has now scored eight goals in his last six appearances in the Premier League and would equal an African record of scoring in seven consecutive games held by Mohamed Salah and Emmanuel Adebayor if he finds the net against Manchester United next weekend.
