Atletico de Madrid beat Man Utd, Man City and Wolves to sign Nigerian striker
Published: August 19, 2023Atlético de Madrid have won the race for the signature of Melilla-born Nigerian striker Samuel Omorodion.
The 19-year-old announced himself to La Liga audiences when he scored 62 minutes into his top-flight debut on the opening day of the 2023-2024 season.
Diario AS has reported that Atlético de Madrid decided to activate his release clause of six million euros (approximately N5 billion in Nigerian currency) on Friday, just four days after he scored against them at Civitas Metropolitano.
As per the report from the Spanish sports daily, Atlético de Madrid saw off competition from English Premier League trio Manchester United, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers to snap up Omorodion.
Given his low release clause, it was an opportunity for the Premier League teams to sign the talented teenager but Atlético de Madrid stole a march on their rivals.
Omorodion will put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Los Colchoneros before he is loaned out for the remainder of the campaign.
Atlético de Madrid wanted to loan Omorodion to Granada but article 130.2 of the RFEF regulations state that a footballer may be registered in only one team of a club, without the possibility of being discharged and registered by the same club in the course of the same season.
Cádiz CF are rumored to be in pole position to sign Omorodion on loan from Atlético de Madrid.
