Son of former Super Eagles defender impressing on trial at West Brom
Published: August 22, 2023Ruben Shakpoke, the son of former Super Eagles fullback Jero Shakpoke, is impressing on trial at Championship club West Brom, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The striker is looking for a new club following his release by Aston Villa at the end of the 2022-2023 campaign.
Shakpoke is training with the Baggies as he aims to bag a contract after a disappointing spell at Villa Park, where his appearances were limited by injuries.
The Anglo-Nigerian player did not make a first team appearance during his time at Aston Villa and only played in fourteen matches combined in the U18 Premier League and Premier League 2.
The 19-year-old was involved in West Brom's Premier League 2 opener against his former club Aston Villa, helping them record a 3-0 win, and also started Monday's six-goal thriller against Blackburn Rovers.
Shakpoke's 43rd minute goal ensured West Brom went into the break level at 2-2 after keeping his composure to score from close range.
Wearing the number 9 jersey, Shakpoke made way for Layton Love at the start of the second half.
Before joining Aston Villa on scholarship terms in 2020, he was a schoolboy at Norwich City.
