Official: Chelsea legend Obi Mikel returns to Stamford Bridge in September
Published: August 24, 2023
Retired Nigeria international John Obi Mikel is set to wear a Chelsea jersey again more than six years after he departed the club.
Through their official website, Chelsea have confirmed that Mikel has been added to the Legends roster and will take part in the Chelsea Legends vs Bayern Munich Legends match at Stamford Bridge in September.
Other Chelsea legends who will be featuring against Bayern Munich are John Terry, Florent Malouda, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien, Hilario, Frank Sinclair, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Jon Harley, Sam Dalla Bona, Danny Granville, Gianfranco Zola, Claude Makelele, Carlo Cudicini, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Frank Leboeuf.
The match is being held in honor of former Chelsea player and manager Gianluca Vialli, who passed away in January at the age of 58, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mikel was arguably the standout player as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties to win the Champions League for the first time in their history on May 19, 2012.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner recorded 372 appearances in all competitions during a ten-and-a-half-year association with Chelsea.
Mikel left Chelsea for Tianjin Jinmen Tiger in 2017, having won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice, and the Champions League and Europa League.
The midfielder called time on his glittering career, which also featured spells at Lyn 1896 FK, Trabzonspor, Middlesbrough FC, Stoke City and Kuwait SC, in September 2022.
