Super Falcons GK Nnadozie saves penalty from Lionesses star Russo as Paris FC beat Arsenal
Published: September 09, 2023
Thirty-three days after Nigeria suffered heartbreak at the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie got her revenge as Paris FC defeated an Arsenal team containing two players named in England's matchday squad on August 7 in Brisbane.
Nnadozie made two penalty saves to deny Women's Super League giants Arsenal the chance to progress to the next round of the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifiers.
Lionesses forward Alessia Russo was introduced off the bench in the 60th minute and another member of England's World Cup squad in the shape of Lotte Wubben-Moy played the full game.
After a goalless first half, the French side led 2-0 in the 57th minute courtesy of two quickfire goals from Mathilde Bourdieu.
Super-sub Russo gave Arsenal a lifeline in the 79th minute when she pulled one back and Jen Beattie headed home in the sixth minute of stoppage time to send the game to extra time.
Louise Fleury gave Paris FC a 3-2 lead in the 106th minute but the Gunners were back on level terms again after 115 minutes when Russo netted the pick of the goals with a superb strike from distance that left Nnadozie helpless.
In the shootout, the Super Falcons star saved Arsenal's third and fourth penalty kick taken by Norway international Frida Maanum and Russo respectively to help the underdogs Paris FC claim an unlikely victory.
