'We beat them 10-0 in Morocco' - Osimhen vows to give his best against Sao Tome and Príncipe
Published: September 10, 2023
Victor Osimhen has promised to give his best in Sunday's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Sao Tome and Príncipe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Osimhen was at his goalscoring best in June 2022 when the Super Eagles recorded their biggest ever win in international football, thrashing Sao Tome and Príncipe 10-0.
The Napoli striker accounted for four of the goals, while Oghenekaro Etebo, Terem Moffi (2), Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and Emmanuel Dennis were the other scorers.
The match between the Super Eagles and Falcons and True Parrots Team is a dead rubber in the sense that Nigeria are already guaranteed qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and their opponents have already been eliminated.
Although there is nothing to play for in today's clash, Osimhen has urged his Super Eagles teammates to take the game seriously.
Speaking to reporters in Uyo, Osimhen said: "We are really serious about this game, we beat them 10-0 in Morocco and of course they will go back to look at their mistakes, and check one or two things, and bring in new players also which we don't know anything about.
"This game is as important as every other game just like the one we played against Sierra Leone, so we are ready, the team is ready, we'll give our all to make sure we win this game and end the qualifiers on a high note."
Osimhen, with seven goals in five matches, is the leading scorer in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, ahead of Sadio Mane (Senegal), Louis Mafouta (Central African Republic) and Youssef Msakni (Tunisia) who are on five goals each for their respective teams.
