Super Eagles team news: Peseiro will not risk Gift Orban for dead rubber clash v Sao Tome and Principe
Published: September 10, 2023
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro is taking no chances with the fitness of KAA Gent marksman Gift Orban, few hours before his side take on Sao Tome and Príncipe in a dead rubber Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Orban is suffering from a minor discomfort in the leg and did not take part in full training in the national team's final workout on Saturday.
The 21-year-old has not received the green light from the Super Eagles medical team to take to the pitch after undergoing a fitness test on Sunday morning.
Peseiro has indicated that Orban won't be risked against Sao Tome and Príncipe and it remains to be seen whether or not he will be included in the gameday squad to make up the numbers with a maximum of twelve players permitted to be named on the substitutes bench.
Orban was aiming to become cap-tied to Nigeria by taking to the pitch against Sao Tome and Príncipe but that dream has now gone up in smoke until at least the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Although Orban has comitted his international future to the Super Eagles, the Togolese Football Federation are still in the race to recruit him for their senior national team.
He has been on fire since his move to Europe in May 2022, scoring 45 goals in 55 matches combined for Stabæk Fotball and Gent.
