'Good for him to stay' - Club Brugge coach responds to possible sale of Chelsea target Nusa in January
Published: September 15, 2023
Speaking at Thursday's press conference before his side's meeting with Sporting Charleroi in the Jupiler Pro League, Club Brugge coach Ronny Deila was quizzed on the possible transfer of Super Eagles-eligible winger Antonio Nusa in the January transfer window.
Nusa was in sensational form during the international break, scoring and assisting on his senior debut against Jordan, before grabbing a brace of assists in his first competitive match for Norway in a 2-1 win over Georgia in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers.
Chelsea were interested in signing Nusa in the summer transfer window but saw a bid of 30 million euros rejected by Club Brugge.
The Blues still retain an interest in the Norwegian-Nigerian wonderkid and will keep monitoring him before trying again for his signature as from the winter transfer market.
Several Premier League clubs are tracking the precocious teenager on the back of his imperious displays for club and country.
Nusa has started seven of the eleven matches played by Club Brugge in the new season and helped them qualify for the group stage of the Europa Conference League.
Deila is convinced that Nusa is in the right place to continue his development and predicted that he will take the next step in his career when the time is ripe.
In quotes relayed by voetbalnieuws.be, the Norwegian football tactician explained: "I don't want to think about that. I think it is good for him to stay.
"In his first two seasons here he did not play much, now he will do so regularly. He can also bring a lot to the team.
"I'm looking forward to helping him develop. Playing European football here and competing for trophies is the best development he can get.
"And as soon as he feels ready to take the step to the top, he will choose something else."
Nusa, who is the youngest player of Nigerian descent to debut in the Norwegian top flight, has a contract with Club Brugge until June 30, 2027.
