'Imagine him alongside Caicedo' - Pundit wants Ugochukwu to partner Chelsea's history-making midfielder
Published: September 24, 2023
Football pundit Dean Jones is looking forward to seeing French-Nigerian midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu play alongside Chelsea's most expensive signing Moisés Caicedo.
The Ecuadorian made history as the most expensive player ever signed by a Premier League team following his move to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove for a fee of £115m, if add-ons are included.
Ugochukwu was not expected to play a significant role for the Blues this season when he arrived in the summer and could have gone out on loan but Mauricio Pochettino decided to let him stay.
Due to a long list of injuries for Chelsea, he got handed his first Premier League start of the campaign last weekend when the Stamford Bridge outfit played a barren draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
The 19-year-old's performance against the Cherries impressed his manager which could do him a lot of good as the season goes on.
Jones has said that he believes that the Super Eagles-eligible midfielder could be one of the less heralded signings who goes on to excel and looks forward to seeing him play with Caicedo in the middle of the park.
"Yeah, people always look at the top-level signings and the numbers around those as the players that are going to define how good the squad is, " he told GIVEMESPORT.
"But what we sometimes miss is the mid-range signings that are made to actually build out a squad. They actually sometimes end up becoming players that you can rely on and merge into stars.
"Ugochukwu is one of those players that can actually become that. Imagine him alongside Caicedo, that's what I'm looking forward to seeing."
It remains to be seen whether Ugochukwu will be handed his second consecutive Premier League start this afternoon when Chelsea face Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
He has played four matches across all competitions for the Blues this season.
