Victor Boniface equals club record as Bayer Leverkusen thrash Cologne to go top of Bundesliga
Published: October 08, 2023Bayer Leverkusen are topping the German Bundesliga table heading into the international break following a 3-0 thrashing of Cologne at the BayArena on Sunday evening.
The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when Jonas Hofmann turned in from close range with Victor Boniface involved in the build-up to the opener.
In the 32nd minute, the Black and Reds doubled the advantage through Jeremie Frimpong, who tapped home after he was found at the far post by Grimaldo.
Bayer Leverkusen overtook VfB Stuttgart as the top scorers in the Bundesliga in the 67th minute when Victor Boniface put the ball in the back of the net after another fine team move - the club's 23 goal in the German top flight this term.
The Nigeria international equaled a club record with his seventh strike in the league this season.
According to German newspaper Welt, only Herbert Waas, Ulf Kirsten, Patrick Helmes and Lucas Alario had managed seven goals after seven games in Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga history.
Waas scored 7 goals in seven matchdays during the 1983-1984 season, Kirsten emulated him in 1996-1997, while Helmes and Alario equaled the record in the 2008-2009 and 2020-2021 campaign.
Boniface's other goals in the Bundesliga came against Borussia Mönchengladbach (2), Darmstadt 98 (2) and Heidenheim (2).
