Saudi PL: Red-hot Onyekuru and Saviour Godwin trade goals in battle of Super Eagles wingers
Published: October 20, 2023Henry Onyekuru was arguably the standout performer as his club Al-Fayha defeated Saviour Godwin's Al-Okhdood Club 2-1 on matchday 10 of the Saudi Pro League on Friday evening.
Former Galatasaray star Onyekuru has been in brilliant form in recent weeks, having registered four goal involvements (2 goals, 2 assists) in his last four games in the Saudi Arabian top flight.
Three players with a Nigerian background were on parade at the Prince Hathloul bin Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium, with Onyekuru and fellow Super Eagles winger Godwin starting for their respective teams, while Anthony Nwakaeme led the line for the visitors.
Twenty-nine minutes into the contest, Onyekuru slotted under the legs of the goalkeeper from an acute angle to break the deadlock.
But in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time, Godwin, with his second goal in Al-Okhdood colors, restored parity for the home team.
Onyekuru turned from scorer to provider at minute 66 when he provided a game-winning assist for Fashion Sakala to make it 2-1.
Of the three Nigerian attack-minded players who started the game, only Nwakaeme went the distance; Onyekuru was replaced in stoppage time and Godwin in the 73rd minute.
In the provisional Saudi Pro League standings, Al-Fayha are sitting in eighth position with 14 points, seven more than Al-Okhdood who occupy fourteenth place.
