Former Arsenal and Middlesbrough striker Akpom finally off the mark for Ajax Amsterdam

Former Arsenal and Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom scored his first goal for Ajax Amsterdam in their 2-0 victory over FC Volendam in a Dutch Eredivisie match played at Johan Cruijff ArenA on Thursday night.

Steven Bergwijn gave the Dutch Giants the lead in the 57th minute with a precise shot into the roof of the net.

A minute before the end of the game,  Akpom planted a header into the goalpost from Steven Berghuis' corner kick to extend the home side's lead.

The Hale End Academy product could have gotten at least two goals in the encounter but was denied by the woodwork.

The 28-year-old started the game on the bench and came on for Brian Brobbey as Ajax sought to get a comfortable lead over their visitors.

It was an excellent performance from the Super Eagles hopeful who had 12 touches of the ball, completed all of his passes, made one key pass, won 2 of his ground duels and earned a 7.98 match rating from Whoscored.com.

Akpom must be glad to have finally gotten off the mark after 9 games in the colours of the 36-time Eredivisie Champions.
