'He's a quality player' - Bassey admits he looked up to Man Utd central defender Maguire
Published: November 06, 2023
Calvin Bassey has hailed Manchester United's centre-back Harry Maguire whom he believes is still a quality defender amidst widespread criticism and has admitted that he looked up to him when they were together at Leicester City.
The England international has struggled for form since his big-money move to Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019 and has not been spared by fans and pundits for his below-par performances.
His unconvincing form has seen him lose his place in Manchester United's starting XI, albeit until recently due to injuries and has also lost the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes.
In contrast to the widespread opinion that the 30-year-old is a bad defender, Bassey believes he remains a quality player and also revealed he has been playing an advisory role to him.
"At the time I was coming through the ranks and he was one of the players I looked up to and still do, he's a quality player," Bassey said to Mirror.
"Now that I'm playing on the opposite side, he plays on the opposite side, just giving me some advice like any top player would.
"He was incredible at Leicester and still is. To do what he did for Leicester was amazing."
The pair were at Leicester City together before Maguire left in 2019, a year before Bassey departed for Glasgow Rangers
They were in action for Fulham and Manchester United respectively on Saturday in a week 11 encounter of the Premier League played at the Craven Cottage.
