NFF technical director Eguavoen in touch with Arsenal-owned GK ahead of possible Super Eagles call-up
Published: November 08, 2023
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Nigeria have made a concrete move to beat the English Football Association to the services of Arsenal-owned goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Despite the public backing Omonia Nicosia glovesman Francis Uzoho received from manager Jose Peseiro in the wake of hs poor showings in the back-to-back international friendlies in October, the Nigeria Football Federation scouting team led by technical director Augustine Eguavoen are scouring Europe for a reliable goalkeeper ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
One of the goalkeepers being considered to beef up the Super Eagles squad is Arthur Okonkwo, who has posted four clean sheets in nine all-competition appearances for Wrexham so far this season.
It is confirmed that NFF's technical director Eguavoen has held multiple talks with Okonkwo with a view to a possible call-up to the Nigeria national team in the future.
London-born Okonkwo has played in friendly matches for England at U15, U16, U17 and U18 levels but qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian dad Uba Okonkwo, who is originally from Anambra State in the Eastern part of Nigeria.
The Hale End Academy product is open to representing the Super Eagles and there's no stumbling block in his way in terms of paperwork as he has been issued with a Nigerian passport.
Nigeria have reignited their interest in Okonkwo a couple of years after he was recommended to former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr by ex-Nigerian Federation boss now Fifa Council member, Amaju Pinnick.
