Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella celebrates Super Eagles call-up with first Bundesliga goal
Published: November 12, 2023
Nathan Tella celebrated his first international call-up to Nigeria's senior national team by scoring his first-ever Bundesliga goal on Sunday afternoon when Bayer Leverkusen defeated Union Berlin 4-0 at the BayArena.
The 24-year-old came on in the 81st minute for Jeremie Frimpong and it took him just a few seconds to get his name on the scoresheet.
In the 83rd minute, Amine Adli laid a pass into his path and the Hale End Academy product slammed the ball into the top right corner.
Alejandro Grimaldo gave the table toppers the lead in the 23rd minute with a precise finish before Odilon Kossounou doubled their lead, three minutes before the hour mark.
German centre-back Jonathan Tah gave the home side a three-goal cushion in the 73rd minute and Tella wrapped up the scoring for the Black and Reds.
The former Southampton forward has now registered two goals in the colours of Bayer Leverkusen as he prepares to link up with the Super Eagles squad for the first time this week ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Victor Boniface was in action for 87 minutes for Xabi Alonso's side and has now failed to score in four consecutive games in the Bundesliga this season.
