'One of the top, top players' - Udogie says he has been impressed with Tottenham teammate from day one
Published: November 23, 2023
Super Eagles-eligible defender Destiny Udogie has lavished praise on Tottenham Hotspur teammate Yves Bissouma, though he has also pointed out that the Mali international often loses in practice games.
Bissouma has endeared himself to Tottenham Hotspur fans with his energetic performances in central midfield and helped the north London club go on a ten-game unbeaten start to the 2023-2024 Premier League season before suffering back-to-back losses against Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 27-year-old has totaled 36 tackles so far in this season's Premier League, bettered only by João Palhinha (52), Pedro Porro (39), Vinicius Souza (38) and Marvelous Nakamba (38).
The former Brighton & Hove star made the cut for the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year before the shortlist was reduced to ten.
Udogie joined Tottenham in the summer of 2022 and was immediately loaned to Udinese to continue his development.
The Italy international returned to his parent club ahead of the start of the season and is now rubbing shoulders with experienced Premier League campaigner, Bissouma.
On Bissouma, Udogie told The Athletic, via The Boot Room : "You can’t take the ball off him. The confidence, the quality in driving the ball. The passes, he’s one of the top, top players.
"He impressed me from the first day. Though he always loses in training games. I don’t know why. Romero’s team always wins."
Bissouma is suspended for Tottenham's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa on Sunday after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in his last game before the international break.
