Official: Nigeria-eligible winger signs new long-term contract with Brentford
Published: November 29, 2023
Through a statement on their official website, Premier League side Brentford have announced that Nigeria-eligible winger Michael Olakigbe has signed a new new long-term contract.
The 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that runs until June 2028 with a club option of one additional year.
Olakigbe joined Brentford B in the summer of 2022 from West London neighbours Fulham, where he spent four years after being part of the youth setup at Queens Park Rangers.
He made his senior debut for the Bees in a Carabao Cup clash against Newport County in August 2023 and has gone on to make five further appearances for the first team including a Premier League debut against Bournemouth in September this year.
In his first season at Brentford, he helped the B team to win the Premier League Cup, going the distance in a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Overall, the Anglo-Nigerian teenager has logged 85 minutes for Brentford's first team spread across six matches.
Olakigbe has caps at U18 level for England and represented the Men's Elite League squad in October, featuring in matches against Romania and Portugal.
He has cited Manchester United and Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo as his footballing idol and has likened himself to ex-Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.
