Dessers struggling to make an impact: Ex-Scotland star insists Rangers must sign a striker in January
Published: December 01, 2023
Former Scotland star Alan Hutton is encouraging Rangers to delve into the transfer market for a more reliable striker in the January transfer window.
The Light Blues brought in Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese in the summer but the number 9 has been struggling to make an impact since landing at the Ibrox Stadium.
In 22 all-competition appearances, the former Europa Conference League top scorer has managed only six goals.
Dessers has been in and out of Rangers starting lineup since the appointment of Philippe Clement as coach, making four starts from a possible nine across all competitions.
After thirteen games in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers, who have a game in hand, trail champions Celtic by eight points.
Hutton reckons that Rangers need to sign a prolific striker to take Clement's side to the next level.
"And at striker too they need to improve. They need and out-and-out number nine who is going to score you 20 goals a season," he said to Football Insider.
"Cyriel Dessers has had an opportunity but it’s not worked and Danilo is a very good player but needs to play alongside someone."
Dessers has not played for Nigeria for over a year, with his last appearance coming against Algeria in a friendly in September 2022.
He is unlikely to be named in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
