'It's a great strike' - Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand hails Chukwueze for fabulous goal against Newcastle
Published: December 14, 2023
Newcastle United crashed out of the Champions League after a 2-1 loss to AC Milan at St James' Park with Samuel Chukwueze coming off the bench to score the game-winning goal for the Italian giants.
The Magpies were by far the better team in the first half but could only come away with one goal at the interval, which gave the Rossoneri a lifeline.
Joelinton broke the deadlock on 33 minutes with a finish into the far corner and it would have been a different story if Newcastle United had gone 2-0 up.
As the game edged towards the hour mark, USMNT star Christian Pulišić slotted in an equalizer with Milan's first shot on target and Samuel Chukwueze curled in from the right hand side of the penalty area for the game-winning goal a minute after replacing
Yunus Musah.
The Nigeria international's 84th minute strike meant he scored in back-to-back Champions League games for the first time in his career.
Rio Ferdinand, who was on punditry duties for TTNT Sports praised Chuwkueze for his goal and also lauded the AC Milan players that were involved in the build-up to the decisive strike.
The Manchester United legend stated: "It's a fabulous strike. Leao had one similar in the first half and messed it up. Transition, turnover, chasing the game and this is when it can go wrong for you.
"Great burst of pace through the middle there and this is all about timing your runs, patience. The weight of that ball tells the wideman what he needs to do.
"The patience of the player on the ball here before it is released, and then the pace of the ball, rolls it slowly, tells him exactly what to do. It's a great strike."
Borussia Dortmund and PSG are the two teams that qualified from the Group of Death while AC Milan are in the Europa League playoffs after finishing third.
