2023 AFCON Nigeria v Cameroon: Aribo confident Super Eagles can put Indomitable Lions to the sword
Published: January 27, 2024
Southampton star Joe Aribo is confident the Super Eagles can put the Indomitable Lions to the sword on Saturday night when they do batlle at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
Aribo has revealed that the Super Eagles are targeting a convincing win over the five-time African champions who struggled to qualify for the knockout rounds, needing two late goals to see of The Gambia in their final group game.
Jose Peseiro's troops were more or less assured qualification to the last 16 after beating hosts Ivory Coast 1-0 on matchday two in Group A.
The Super Eagles have been defensively solid at the back with back-to-back clean sheets in narrow 1-0 wins against the Elephants and Wild Dogs.
Aribo has urged the Super Eagles forwards to produce a dominant display against the Indomitable Lions, after only one goal was scored from open play in the group stage.
"Our aim again is to win. We want to do it well convincingly of course but we have to stay just solid defensively and I know for us everything will gel going forward and the goals will start flowing, so that's our aim," he told Hot Sports.
On his personal message to Nigerian fans back home, he said: "We're just thankful honestly because they keep us going. They're amazing supporters and we want to give back to the nation so that's what we want to do."
Aribo started Nigeria's win over Guinea-Bissau and was a second half substitute in Nigeria's opening match versus Equatorial Guinea.
