'One step at a time' - Okocha backs Super Eagles to beat Bafana Bafana and reach 2023 AFCON final
Published: February 05, 2024
Nigeria and South Africa will face off in a blockbuster 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal clash at the Stade de la Paix, Bouaké on Wednesday evening.
Former Nigeria captain Austin Jay-Jay Okocha is backing the Super Eagles to win a fourth AFCON title but advised that the team coached by Jose Peseiro must take it one game at a time to achieve their ambition of winning the ongoing tournament.
Okocha has been an ever-present at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations matches involving the Super Eagles, motivating and inspiring the players to victory.
Since the Bolton Wanderers legend retired from the Super Eagles, no player has been able to match his level of artistry in the national team.
Arguably one of the most recognizable Nigerian players in history, Okocha played in five Africa Cup of Nations - 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 - winning gold, silver and bronze three times.
In an interview with Arise News monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Okocha said: "It is open but of course as a hardcore Nigerian fan I expect our team to grab the opportunity and make it to the final and give themselves the chance to win it.
"It's one step at a time, we have South Africa to play next. We just have to earn the right to win a football match it doesn't matter how now, we just have to win."
Only the legendary Rashidi Yekini (13) scored more goals than Okocha (7) among Nigerian players to have featured at the Africa Cup of Nations.
