Super Eagles' Italian Serie A stars: Chukwueze already back; return dates for Osimhen, Lookman after AFCON
Published: February 14, 2024The return dates for three Italian-based Super Eagles stars who competed at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have been revealed by celebrated Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport.
According to the Rome-based newspaper, Osimhen has postponed his return to Italy until Thursday, February 15 and is at serious risk of missing Napoli's clash against Genoa on Saturday.
Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri is expected to run the rule over the reigning African Footballer of the Year on Friday before deciding whether to include him in the matchday squad against Genoa.
The 25-year-old started all the seven games played by Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and would be physically exhausted after such a demanding tournament.
Osimhen should land in Capodichino tomorrow, twenty four hours after the arrival in Italy of Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman.
Lookman played a pivotal role for the Super Eagles in Ivory Coast and scored three goals - a feat that earned him a spot on CAF's Best XI for the 2023 AFCON.
Samuel Chuwkueze returned to Milan on Wednesday and it remains to be seen whether he will be named in the squad for the Europa League meeting with Rennes at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles winger was spotted in AC Milan's training session on Wednesday but did not participate in any of the activities and instead wore casual clothes.
