'Whichever comes first' - Luton Town striker Elijah Adebayo not ruling out playing for England's Three Lions
Published: February 17, 2024
The international future of Elijah Adebayo has been a subject of speculation in recent weeks on the back of his outstanding performances for Premier League side Luton Town.
Adebayo is blessed with physical attributes and aerial ability, scoring four goals through headers in the current season, which makes him the player with the most headed goals in the Premier League - an honour he shares with Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal), Scott McTominay (Manchester United) and Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest).
The lanky striker has made it clear that he would jump at an opportunity to play international football for the Super Eagles or England's Three Lions.
However, Elijah's mother wants her son to commit his international future to Nigeria over England, but would also be happy to see him don the colors of the 1966 world champions.
A product of the Fulham academy, Adebayo is planning to visit Lagos this summer, for the first time since he was a boy.
Speaking on his international future, Adebayo told The Times (subscription required): "I would like to play for Nigeria, It would make my mum happy, make her proud. That’s something we’ve spoken about. Playing for England?
"It would be a case of whichever comes first. My mum would be proud if I played for Nigeria or England, but Nigeria especially."
Six members of Nigeria's squad to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations - Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Joe Aribo, Alex Iwobi, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ademola Lookman - chose to represent Nigeria over England at senior level.
