'One of our best players' - Leicester coach provides injury update on Super Eagles midfielder Ndidi
Published: February 23, 2024
Leicester City coach Enzo Maresca addressed the media on Thursday, on the eve of his side's huge Championship clash with Leeds United and touched on a number of issues, among them the fitness of Nigeria internationals Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Ndidi has not featured for the Foxes in their last ten games due to a muscle injury that required surgery, while Iheanacho had fitness problems before heading to Abidjan to link up with the Super Eagles squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The ailment kept Ndidi out of the Nigeria squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and Jose Peseiro's team were able to cope without arguably the most important player in the squad, having reached the final of the competition.
Maresca also considers the Nath Boys product a key player for his team as he confirmed that the Nigerian is still undergoing rehabilitation and will not be at his disposal for the trip to Elland Road.
In quotes related by the official webpage of the Foxes, Maresca stated: "The only one at the moment is Wilf. He is still injured. One of our best players, or best position, is Wilf. When he’s not there, we used Cesare.
"Now they’re not there so we try to adapt. Unfortunately Wilf is still injured. We have also Will Alves."
The Italian football tactician went on to reveal that Ndidi's international teammate Kelechi Iheanacho has returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty and is available for selection.
The Manchester City academy product was left out of the Leicester City squad as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough last week.
