Nottingham Forest boss provides update on Super Eagles duo Aina, Awoniyi pre-Liverpool
Published: March 01, 2024
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo addressed the media at the pre-match press conference before his side's Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
The Portuguese provided fitness updates on two Super Eagles players in the shape of Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Aina has missed three games in a row, against West Ham United, Aston Villa and Manchester United, due to injury since his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nuno Espírito Santo assured that fellow 2023 Africa Cup of Nations stars Ibrahim Sangaré and Willy Boly are making progress from their recoveries from injuries, but there was no good news regarding the Nigerian wing-back.
The 50-year-old went on to say that he's not sure whether he can recover any players for Saturday's clash at the City Ground.
"Not sure. Let's see tomorrow, some players are in the final part of their recovery. Ibrahim (Sangaré) is close," Nuno Espírito Santo told reporters.
"Chris Wood is also closer. Ola and Nuno (Tavares) more problems. Boly is in the final days of his recovery."
Nuno Espírito Santo indicated that there's an improvement in the fitness levels of Awoniyi as the number 9 was able to go the distance in the tough game with Manchester United on Wednesday.
"He was important the previous game, he didn't play 45 minutes, today he was able to finish the game.
"I think he's doing better in terms of fitness. He was out for a long period so let's see for the next one how he recovers, it's going to be important."
Twelve games to the end of the 2023-2024 season, Nottingham Forest are looking over their shoulders as they are four points above the drop zone.
