Jose Peseiro announces end to 21-month tenure as Nigeria national team coach
Published: March 01, 2024Through a statement on his X account, José Peseiro has confirmed that he has left his position as the Super Eagles coach following the expiration of his contract.
The Portuguese tactician took over as the coach of the West African side in May 2022 following their failure to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
His initial contract with the Nigeria Football Federation lasted for 12 months but he eventually got an extension and was given the mandate to guide the Super Eagles to the semifinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, at least.
The former Real Madrid coach would successfully guide Nigeria to the final of the tournament where they lost narrowly to host nation Ivory Coast.
With his contract coming to an end yesterday, the 63-year-old took to social media today to confirm his departure as the head coach of the three-time African Champions and also expressed his joy upon being allowed to coach the Super Eagles.
The NFF will now have to act swiftly to appoint a new coach to avoid not qualifying for the 2025 AFCON and 2026 World Cup respectively.
