17 goal involvements in 24 games: Rangers striker Dessers explains why he's flourishing under Clement
Published: March 02, 2024
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has revealed the reason behind his excellent form under Philippe Clement who succeeded Michael Beale as Rangers' manager last October.
The Nigeria international's first few months at the Ibrox Stadium were full of upheavals with the fans continuously booing him for his poor performances.
However, the 29-year-old has witnessed a change in fortune in recent months particularly under Clement, registering 17 goal involvements in 24 games.
His newly found form has also made him one of the fans' favorites at the moment as he has undoubtedly been one of the best players for the Light Blues in recent weeks.
The Belgium-born forward has revealed the reason behind his change in fortune under the Belgian tactician, stating that they share a personal connection as they both speak a common language.
In quotes relayed by Daily Record, he said: "I know the manager from Belgium - I played a couple of times against him when he was the manager at Club Brugge.
"We had a title battle when I was at Genk and we ended up second. It was clear in Belgium that he was an amazing manager, he won three titles back-to-back.
"He knows what's needed at this stage of the season and hopefully he can repeat this again. Obviously it's a little bit easier as when we have a personal talk we can speak in Dutch.
"That makes it a little bit easier for both of us. But there are no special things around it – it's not as of I'm his favourite because I was born in Belgium. That's not the case!"
Under Clement, Rangers won the Scottish League Cup for the first time since 2011 and are currently leading the Scottish Premiership standings with 70 points, two points more than defending champions and second-placed team Celtic.
Dessers will be hoping to continue his resurgence as we head into the final months of the season with the Light Blues in good position to clinch the league title.
