Who is Michael Folorunsho? The Super Eagles-eligible midfielder named in Italy's latest squad

The name Michael Folorunsho might not be ringing bells for some Nigerian football fans, but the 26-year-old midfielder has caught the eye of the Italian national team, sparking a tug-of-war for his international allegiance.

Born in Rome to Nigerian parents, Folorunsho finds himself with the potential to represent either the Super Eagles or Gli Azzurri.

Folorunsho's journey has been one of perseverance. Despite being on the books of Serie A giants Napoli since 2019, he hasn't cracked the first team yet.

Instead, he's honed his skills through various loan spells at clubs like Bari, Reggina and Pordenone. 

This season, however, has been a breakout year for Folorunsho. Loaned to Hellas Verona, he's impressed with his performances in central midfield, contributing a healthy tally of four goals and an assist in Serie A action.

His impressive displays haven't gone unnoticed by national team scouts.

While Nigeria might have been hoping to lure him into their ranks, Folorunsho received his first call-up to the Italian national team in March 2024.
