'It's the story of a foreign player' - AC Milan boss backs Chukwueze despite rocky start to life in Italy
Published: March 17, 2024
AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has defended new signing Samuel Chukwueze, acknowledging the Nigerian winger's struggles to adapt to Serie A but emphasizing his positive contributions when given the chance.
Chukwueze arrived at the San Siro in the summer transfer window from Villarreal, bringing with him a reputation for pace and trickery.
However despite opening his scoring account in the league, his initial Serie A experience hasn't been without its challenges.
Pioli, speaking to DAZN via Milan News after their recent match against Hellas Verona, conceded that Chukwueze is still adjusting to the demands of the Italian league.
Pioli in Chukwueze's defence, highlighted the significant differences between Serie A and La Liga, where Chukwueze previously thrived and further went on to express his frustration with those who have been quick to criticize Chukwueze whilst also emphasizing the need for understanding, citing the cultural and tactical adjustments Chukwueze is facing.
"It's the story of a foreign player who comes to play in a difficult and complicated league, where the demands are certainly different than those he had at Villarreal. He is putting a lot of will and effort into trying to do the best possible," Pioli remarked.
"I believe that too many times judgments are rushed and there is no time to wait. They are guys who come from a different mentality, another way of living and training, another way of playing.
"I'm very happy with the goal and that he's doing well when he's called upon. We have the patience necessary to wait for all our players."
The Super Eagles wideman came off the bench to score his first league goal for the Rossoneri with a well timed right footed volley courtesy of Theo Hernandez's out swinging corner from the left in the 79th minute of Milan's 3-1 win over Hellas Verona.
