Nigeria 2 Uganda 0: Super-subs Okah, Okwuchukwu find the net as Falconets seal African Games final spot
Published: March 18, 2024
Nigeria have booked their place in the final of the 2023 African games, courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Uganda on Monday evening.
The Falconets headed into the game as favorites, being the defending champions and finishing as group winners with six points from two games.
Coach Christopher Danjuma made two changes to the team that beat Sengal in the last game with Faith Omilana restored as the starting goalkeeper replacing Anderline Mgbechi while Oluwabunmi Oladeji came in for Oluchi Ohaegbulam.
Nigeria struggled to get the game going as Uganda kept them at bay for the entire duration of the game and that continued into the second half.
With his side struggling to break the deadlock, Danjuma was forced to make his first changes in the 71st minute with Okah Adaobi replacing Olushola Shobowale and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu came in for Motunrayo Ezekiel.
Adaobi would open the scoring, three minutes after she came on, much to the relief of her teammates and coach.
The Falconets thought they had doubled their lead in the 84th minute but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Substitute Okwuchukwu finally got the desired two-goal cushion, a minute before the end of the normal regulation time to seal the victory for the defending champions
They will face the winner between host nation Ghana and Senegal in the final.
