Published: March 27, 2024
Following Nigeria's 2-0 defeat to Mali in Marrakech, Morocco, attention has turned to the condition of Moses Simon, who was injured during the match.
Kenneth Omeruo, a key figure in the Nigerian team, offered insight into Simon's situation.
Mali's victory marked their first win over the Super Eagles in 17,735 days, a result that caught many by surprise.
El Bilal Toure opened the scoring for Mali in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Chidozie Awaziem. Kamoury Doumbia secured the win with a late goal three minutes from time.
Nigeria had their chances to equalize, with Moses Simon presented with a promising opportunity in the 27th minute after being set up by Alex Iwobi.
However, Simon failed to convert the chance and sustained an injury in the process. He was subsequently substituted off for Cyriel Dessers.
Speaking after the match, Kenneth Omeruo addressed concerns about Simon's injury, stating, "There's no information about Moses Simon. They went to the hospital, and we're hopeful it's not something serious.
"He is one of our best players, and it's a setback for us."
Despite the setback, Omeruo emphasized that Simon's injury should not be used as an excuse for the defeat, citing the friendly nature of the match as an opportunity for the team to assess themselves ahead of World Cup qualifiers in June.
Reflecting on the game, Omeruo acknowledged Nigeria's shortcomings but remained positive about the team's performance.
"It wasn't a bad game," he remarked. "We played better in the second half, but we didn't take our chances, and we conceded two goals."
Omeruo also praised the team's camaraderie during their training camp in Morocco, highlighting a strong bond among the players.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of the coaching staff, emphasizing their experience and management of the team.
