'It was a mistake' - Ex-academy player Fiabema blasts Chelsea for sacking Tuchel
Published: April 03, 2024
Former Chelsea youth teamer Bryan Fiabema has faulted Chelsea's decision to sack Thomas Tuchel, who was the last manager to win a trophy for the club.
The Blues parted ways with the German tactician in September 2022 after a run of unconvincing performances and a reported tussle with the club's new ownership headed by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
During Tuchel's time at Stamford Bridge, he won one UEFA Champions League which was the last major silverware won by Chelsea, a UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
The 50-year-old also guided the six-time English champions to the final of the EFL Cup and FA Cup in 2022 where they lost to Liverpool as well as the FA Cup final in 2021, losing to Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi's Leicester City.
Asked whether he was surprised by the sacking of Tuchel while speaking to The Byline Show, Fiabema stated that the Blues were wrong to dismiss the one-time UEFA Men's Coach of the Year who he felt did well during his stay at the club.
"Very, very. I think to this day even it was a mistake because if you look back, if you are at a big club like that you always have to win trophies," Fiabema said.
"He won trophies, I would say he did well but just seeing what he did with the players and the team, I think it was a mistake."
Fiabema was until recently a Chelsea player, got released at the end of last season and has now joined Real Sociedad but currently represents the LaLiga outfit's B side.
