Nottingham Forest, Fulham target Akpom seeking to leave Ajax; Dutch giants blocked transfer in January
Published: April 16, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Nigerian attacker Chuba Akpom has made a decision on his future with Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam.
The Hale End Academy product has made it clear he wants to leave the four-time European champions, less than a year after he was acquired from Championship outfit Middlesbrough.
Akpom is eager to join a new club in the summer transfer window due to a lack of playing time at Ajax Amsterdam.
The 28-year-old has started only eight of the forty-three games contested by the Amsterdam club in the ongoing season and was in action for 1,218 minutes.
Akpom considered leaving the Netherlands in the January transfer window but the powers that be at Ajax blocked his transfer.
He attracted concrete interest from Premier League duo Nottingham Forest and Fulham as well as Ligue 1 teams Lille and Lens in the winter transfer market and it is possible that the aforementioned clubs will attempt to sign him again in the summer.
German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart also explored the possibility of signing Akpom in January but the deal did not go through as Ajax wanted to retain him for the second part of the season.
Akpom struggled in his first two months as an Ajax Amsterdam player but has been enjoying a new lease of life since the appointment of John van 't Schip as coach, scoring 12 goals in 22 games with the retired Netherlands international in the Ajax dugout.
The Super Eagles hopeful has a contract with Ajax Amsterdam until June 30, 2028.
