Chippa United eyeing move for Black Stars goalkeeper as possible replacement for Nwabali
Published: April 16, 2024
In a move to bolster their squad, Chippa United have set their sights on Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori as a potential replacement for Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who has been linked with moves to Europe as well as the Middle East according to Soccer Laduma.
Nwabali's impressive showing at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations has reportedly attracted interest from English Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers as well as Saudi Pro League side, Al-Ettifaq.
The Nigerian international is expected to leave Chippa United, leaving a void in the team's goalkeeping department.
The Chilli boys have now turned their attention to Ofori, who is nearing the end of his contract with Orlando Pirates.
The Ghanaian international's current deal expires in June, making him a tempting target for clubs looking to snap up a quality goalkeeper on a free transfer.
However, Chippa United's hopes of landing Ofori could be dashed by Orlando Pirates' decision.
The Soweto giants are considering extending Ofori's contract, which would put an end to Chippa United's pursuit of the experienced goalkeeper.
It remains to be seen whether Chippa United will be successful in their bid to sign Ofori.
The coming weeks could be crucial in determining the future of both goalkeepers, with Nwabali potentially moving abroad and Ofori facing a decision about his long-term future at Orlando Pirates.
The former Enyimba glovesman ensured qualification to the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup for the Chilli boys last Sunday, saving a penalty against TS Galaxy and keeping a clean sheet in his side's 2-0 win at the Mbombela Stadium.
