'It's going to be difficult' - Bournemouth boss on whether Solanke can win the PL golden boot award
Published: April 23, 2024
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has acknowledged that it is going to be difficult for Super Eagles-eligible striker Dominic Solanke to clinch the Premier League Golden Boot award for the 2023-2024 season.
Solanke is enjoying an outstanding season with the Cherries, scoring eighteen goals in 33 matches in the Premier League, all of which he started.
The one-cap England international has broken the record for the most goals scored by a Bournemouth player for a single season, surpassing Joshua King who managed sixteen goals over the course of the 2016-2017 campaign.
Only Chelsea's Cole Palmer (20), Manchester City's Erling Haaland (20) and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins (19) have scored more goals than the Anglo-Nigerian center forward this term.
Solanke has played a crucial role in Bournemouth's attempts to surpass their club record tally of 46 points in a Premier League season.
Speaking at Tuesday's pre-match press conference before his side's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Andoni Iraola underlined that he was delighted with the form shown by the former Chelsea and Liverpool striker this season.
In quotes relayed by the BBC, he said: "It’s going to be difficult because the other forwards are in great form, they are scoring goals but he will try for sure.
"I think he is performing really well and he has been really consistent throughout this season and I think he has given us very good performances and I will ask only for the goals.
"I’m very happy and I’m sure he’s very happy if he gives us points, even if he doesn’t score more."
2017 Fifa U20 World Cup Golden Ball winner Solanke joined Bournemouth in January 2019 and has registered 76 goals in 211 games for the south coast club, while producing 31 assists.
