'Scored many goals' - Legendary Brazil striker heaps praise on Osimhen, tips him to do well at new club
Published: April 27, 2024
Legendary Brazil striker Antonio Careca has hailed Victor Osimhen for the incredible performance he has had for Napoli over the years amid his impending departure from the 2022-2023 Serie A champions.
The Super Eagles star forward joined Napoli in the summer of 2020 from French side Lille and became the most expensive signing in the history of the club.
He had a slow start to life in Naples, managing just 10 goals across all competitions in his first season but blossomed in the next campaign, winning the Serie A Best Young Player of the Year award.
The Nigeria international would then play a key role in helping Napoli end their wait for the Scudetto last season, scoring 26 goals in 32 league games, ending the campaign as the top scorer in the Serie A.
He signed a new contract with the club earlier this season but it appears that was just done to make Napoli get as much as they can from his sale and also protect his interest at the same time.
With the 25-year-old likely to leave in the summer, Careca has hailed the impact of the lanky striker at Napoli and is hoping that he is properly replaced.
"I hope that he can continue to do well just like he did in Naples. I met him, he is a respectable boy and he did very well with Napoli, scoring many goals and contributing to the championship victory should he really leave, he can find a new player worthy of Osimhen," he was quoted as saying by Napoli Magazine
During his stay in the Italian top-flight, Osimhen has managed to break the record for most goals scored by an African player in a season and the record number of goals netted by an African player in the history of the league.
