Did Boniface's Bayer smash European record? UEFA confirms longest unbeaten run record held by Celtic
Published: May 10, 2024
Contrary to popular belief, Victor Boniface's Bayer Leverkusen did not smash the record for Europe's longest unbeaten run in all competitions after coming from behind to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw with AS Roma at the BayArena on Thursday night.
The draw saw the German champions take their unbeaten run to 49 games in all competitions, comprising 32 in the Bundesliga, 12 in the Europa League, and 5 in the DFB Pokal.
It was widely reported that Leverkusen had broken Benfica's previous 48-match unbeaten record, set between December 1963 and February 1965.
The official website of UEFA has clarified that Europe's longest unbeaten run in all competitions is held by Scottish club Celtic who were unbeaten inn 62 consecutive matches
The Hoops set the record 107 years ago, with all of those sixty-two fixtures coming in the league.
Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is in second place, going unbeaten in 60 league games between 1933 and 1935, followed by Bayer Leverkusen (49) who have the best record since the start of European competition.
Boniface has played in thirty-one out of the 49 games contested by Bayer Leverkusen this season, registering an impressive 29 goal involvements (19 goals, 10 assists).
His appearances would have been more if not for an injury he suffered during Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations training camp in the United Arab Emirates, which sidelined him for three months.
Nathan Tella has featured in 36 games for Die Werkself and has directly participated in ten goals.
